Spotify, mixed up & messed up…

Apparently, something has changed on spotify! It seems to try to mix up tracks from independent artists with similar tracks released by big labels. I recently realized I have an icon appearing on my spotify Artist page claiming I have “split rights” with various artists that had nothing to do with my recording, artists that have signed with big classical labels…

It is misleading, you might think that it would be beneficial for me but it’s not. What has been happening is that my stream counts were benefiting that label, that has nothing to do with my recording. I was being paid nothing basically!

When I addressed this issue with the spotify team, they explained it’s because they have same metadata or audio track which doesn’t make any sense at all!!! Interestingly enough, as I have talked to many of their “advisors” about this issue, they’ve always copied and pasted the same prepared answer, exact same wordings!

So, this has happened to 6 tracks from my album “Melancholies and Joys” so far, and I had to report it multiple times during the past 30 days to fix my tracks being mixed up or as they like to call it track linked with other artists. The only similarity with these tracks is their title which is inevitable in classical music.

It’s really messed up and it has never been the other way around, their tracks being mixed up with mine, so I can steal their stream counts… not that I want to but my point is that it seems to be kind of a systematic exploitation of independent artists or something really wrong with their system that cannot prevent such frustrating and time consuming issues for all sides!

Meanwhile, I am not the only one experiencing this. This is like an epidemic matter on Spotify! Many independent artists are affected.

Have you had any similar experiences either as an artist or audience?
